Is Dead at 77
- Elgin Blaine Hurlbert, 77, a long-
time Pacific Grove resident, retired
L Navy captain, noted ornithologist and
- civic leader, died Sunday at Letterman
· Army Medical Center in San
. Francisco.
Capt. Hurlbert was the brother of the
late Elmarie Hurlbert Dyke, founder of
the Pacific Grove Feast of Lanterns,
+ who died Jan. 17,1981.
He was born in Campbell on Sept. 24,
• 1904, and attended Occidental College
: (earning the nickname "Oxy"), San
I Jose State and the University of Cali-
fornia, as well as the Navy's General
. Line School. He was married during his
: college days to a former Pacific Grove
2 schoolteacher, Winifred Rugh.
Ensign
7- He enlisted in the Naval Reserve in
i 1924 and in 1929 was commissioned an.
• ensign. He was attached to the Fifth
: Fleet Division, San Jose.
I After working for the city of Pacific
Grove in the recreation department
and as timekeeper and assistant
shipping clerk for Hovden Food Prod-
ucts Corp. in Monterey, he became a
deputy probation officer and juvenile
officer for the county of Monterey and
was serving in that capacity when
called to active duty in 1941.
* He served aboard the USS Yorktown
as a lieutenant, participating in the
; Battle of the Coral Sea as well as the
attacks on Mili and Jaluit in the Mar-
' shall Islands and on Lae and Salamaua
in New Guinea. The Yorktown was
sunk on June 7, 1942, during the Battle
of Midway, but Lt. Hurlbert was
uninjured.
For the remainder of the war he
.served in the Atlantic in anti-subma-
frine warfare and convoy escort. At
1 war's end he assisted in the building of
· .the heavy cruiser USS Helena in
. Quincy, Mass., and served on that ship
:as first lieutenant and damage control
f .officer, later becoming operations offi-
'cer and navigator of the ship while she
made a round-the-world cruise as the
.first "saluting" ship to visit foreign
ports after the war.

York, and later for 21/2 years in Japan.
Acquiring his own ship, Capt. Hurl-
bert took the USS Mauna Loa, an am-
munition ship, on a tour of duty with
the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean.
His final duty was with Naval Reserve
Programs on the staff of Commandant,
Twelfth Naval District in San Fran-
cisco. He retired June 30, 1960.
After retirement, Capt. and Mrs.
Hurlbert touted the country as bird-
watchers. pursuing studies of bird ac-
tivities and bird migrations. He served
for three terms as president of the
Monterey Peninsula Audubon Society
and was also chairman of the Northern
Chapter of the Western Bird Banding
Association. The Hurlberts were also
active in the Sierra Club, the Nature
Conservancy and the Point Lobos
League.
AMBAG Organizer
Capt. Hurlbert assisted in the forma-
tion and organization of the Association
of Monterey Bay Area Governments,
being appointed chairman of the first
nomination committee and serving as a
non-elected member of the association.
In 1970 he was appointed to the Point
Lobos Advisory Committee. He spoke
before civic* and community organiza-
tions on the subjects of ornithology and
conservation.
He is survived by his wife, Winifred
Rugh Hurlbert; son, Jerry of Weav-
erville; daughter, Jean Jorgensen of
Jackson, Wyo.; eight grandchildren
and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held in
the Masonic Temple in Pacific Grove
on Saturday at 11 a.m.
According to his wishes his ashes will
be scattered off Point Pinos in Pacific
Grove by the California Cremation
Society.
The family suggests memorial con-
tributions to the Pacific Grove Mu-
seum of Natural History Association,
